The 1,000 Best Girl Baby Names

On This Page
Is there anything more fun (or overwhelming!) than hunting for the perfect name for your baby girl? With thousands and thousands of options out there, and each prettier than the last, we bet your list is pretty long. But fear not, because there is a list out there that is definitely much longer than yours, and we’ve got it right here.
Every year the Social Security Association puts out their long-awaited list of 1,000 most popular baby names, and the baby girl names other parents are picking are so much fun to browse. There are lots of flower and nature names (like Magnolia and River) on here, with elegant and vintage favorites scattered up and down the list. You’ll also notice many top names that can be shortened to Ellie, which is cool as elle is French for “she.”
The top 1,000 girl names include modern and gender-neutral picks, but the top 40 (detailed below with meanings) are trending uber-feminine and pretty. French and other European names having a major moment (Sophia, Isabelle) as are nature names (Willow, Lily, Aurora). And the letter y is prevalent right now to feminize neutral names (Madisyn, Londyn, Emersyn). If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll find lots of inspiration for both rare names and baby girl name trends.
Whether you’re looking to set your girl apart from the crowd in a big way or use something more recognizable, here are the top 1,000 baby girl names with special mention and details on America’s best of the best. Where do your favorite girl names fall?
The Top 10 Best Girl Baby Names
-
Olivia: It probably comes as no surprise to most that this pretty pick takes the top spot, as we all know at least a handful of Olivias age 10 and under, no? The Latin name meaning “olive tree” is just lovely.
-
Emma: In second position is a vintage girls’ name from the German translating to “universal.”
-
Charlotte: Sweet Char, Charlie, or Lottie will love her name that has pretty much always been popular since the naming charts began. The French name meaning “free man” remained well within the top 300, even during its lowest ranking years.
-
Amelia: With a soft sound and the strong meaning “work,” we love seeing her in the top 10!
-
Sophia: From the Greek, meaning “wisdom,” it’s a flowing yet understated name that’s been on the rise since the early 2000’s.
-
Isabella: More romantic vibes for our top names, featuring a four-syllable stunner that has Spanish/Italian origins (as a version of Elizabeth, “pledged to God”) and global appeal.
-
Ava: Number 3 has mixed origins (Hebrew, Latin, and Germanic) and an assortment of meanings so you can ascribe to it the one that feels like the best fit: “life; bird; or water/island.”
-
Mia: Meaning “mine” in Italian, it’s a gorgeous name bursting with love and pride for your little girl.
-
Evelyn: More vintage vibes for our top girl name list, this one means “desired” from the French and shares a German root with Ava for the alternate meaning “water/island.”
-
Luna: Your little “moon” child will grow beautifully into this soulful Italian baby girl name.
The Best Girl Baby Names: 11–25
-
Harper: You’re not alone if you feel like you woke up one day and this one was everywhere. English for “harp player,” the moniker was first known for feminine use by the novelist Harper Lee (for whom it was originally a surname).
-
Camila: Spanish from the Latin, meaning “young ceremonial attendant,” it’s a spirited name with vague nature ties (for its adjacency to the camellia flower).
-
Sofia: You’re not seeing double; the Spanish spelling of Sophia also ranks high!
-
Scarlett: There are three spelling variations in the top 1,000 girl names of this strikingly beautiful girls’ name that means “red.”
-
Elizabeth: While the boys’ top 25 was loaded with classics like Henry and William, this name beloved for centuries is one of the few for the girls that you hear often now and throughout history. It means “pledged to God.”
-
Eleanor: More vintage adorableness is always welcome here. In the age of “cottagecore” and clogs, it should come as no surprise that an ancient French Provincial name is back in. Would you believe she ranked three spots higher in 2020 than she did in 1920?
-
Emily: It’s been big since the 1980’s (and had been from the 1880’s to the 1960’s!) and shows no signs of slowing down soon. Meaning “rival” of Latin roots, it has fire to it, despite a soft and feminine sound.
-
Chloe: This classic French name squeaked into the top 25 in 2021 after being just outside of it in 2020, and then leaped into the top 20 in 2022.
-
Mila: The pretty girls’ name of Slavic/Russian roots means “gracious” or “dear.”
-
Violet: This girl's name is anything but shrinking! In 2022 it bloomed from its spot at #35 all the way to #20.
-
Penelope: This Greek baby girl name translates to “weaver” and offers up lots of fun nickname options like Penny, Nelly, Penel, and Poppy.
-
Gianna: European names are ranking high at the moment, and this beaut from Italy is no exception. It translates to “the Lord is gracious,” as a shortened version of Giovanna.
-
Aria: This melodic music-inspired name has climbed four spots in popularity in the past year.
-
Abigail: She might not have made the top 10, but don’t discount this old-fashioned feeling Hebrew name which translates adorably to “my father is joyful.” (Insert tearful-smiling emoji here!).
-
Ella: With mixed English and German roots meaning “fairy maiden” or “completely,” it’s a short and sweet name idea for a little girl.
-
Avery: A gender-neutral name (ranking in the low 200’s for boys), it has the adorable meaning “ruler of the elves.”
-
Hazel: This color name that means "the hazelnut tree" evokes both a vintage vibe and an earthy quality.
-
Nora: Meaning "honor" and "shining light," this popular Irish name is an unquestionably hopeful baby name.
-
Layla: An anglicized, phonetic spelling of the Arabic name Leila, it means “night.”
-
Lily: This floral baby name has been inching its way up in recent years.
-
Aurora: This lovely girl's name evokes both the dawn and the tale of Sleeping Beauty.
-
Nova: Nova means "new" which is apt for the novel baby name that's becoming a modern classic!
-
Ellie: It's no surprise that this sweet diminutive of three blockbuster girls names (Eleanor, Ella, and Elizabeth) has staked out its own spot in the top 30!
-
Madison: The English name meaning “son of Matthew” used to be more prevalent for boys, but is now barely in the top 900 for that list and has been sitting pretty in the girls’ top names for over 20 years.
-
Grace: A gorgeous and timeless name with a meaning anyone would be thrilled for their little girl to embody.
-
Isla: Calling all jet-setters and water-lovers: Give your beachy babe a name that comes from the word "island."
-
Willow: A beautiful tribute to the elegant Willow tree, this name hails from Old English.
-
Zoe: With Greek roots, this name means life, and its alternate spelling (Zoey) isn't far behind at #45!
-
Riley: A gender-neutral name, this British moniker ranks significantly higher for girls than boys (#225).
- Stella: Meaning "star" this baby name will perfectly suit the light of your life.
