How to Prepare your Family for an Emergency
You made sure to baby-proof your home and you make sure your little one is never left unattended. But have you thought about being prepared in case of an emergency like a flood, an earthquake, or a hurricane? We have some helpful tips to make sure you and your family are prepared!
Prepare an Emergency Kit
One of the most important steps when it comes to being prepared in case of an emergency is making sure you have an emergency kit. What should be included in an emergency kit? Here are some ideas.
- Water
- Batteries
- Emergency food kit
- First aid kit
- Thermal blankets
- Hand sanitizer
- Sunscreen
- Cell phone charger
- Flashlight
- Any medication you or someone in your family needs on a daily basis
Designate a Meeting Place
If disaster strikes during the school or workday, what’s the plan to meet up with the rest of your family? Where is your designated meeting place? Make sure everyone in your family knows where they can find each other.
On that note, it’s also important to make sure your little ones know your phone number and home address. If they’re too small to remember it, consider writing it down for them to keep in their backpack.
Choose a Trusted Adult
If your child can’t get in touch with you during an emergency, it’s important that they have another adult they can go to whether that’s a babysitter, an aunt, or a grandparent. Make sure you talk to the trusted adult and ask if they’re okay being in this position.
Although you can’t be prepared for every possibility, you can make sure that your family is in a better position by preparing an emergency kit, designating a meeting place, and choosing a trusted adult.
