How SNOO's White Noise Calms Babies and Boosts Sleep

Most parents know that white noise can help babies sleep. What many don't realize is that not all white noise works—and that using the wrong kind, or playing it at the wrong volume, can mean the difference between a baby who settles and one who keeps crying. SNOO is the only white noise system designed to get both things right: the right sound and the right volume, automatically, in response to your baby's fussing. Here's how it works.

Why White Noise Works on Babies

Silence isn't soothing for newborns—it's startling. For 9 months, your baby lived in a womb that was anything but quiet. The constant rush of blood flow created a loud, rumbly hum around the clock—closer to the sound of a running shower than a library. When babies are born into a quiet room, they've essentially gone from sensory richness to sensory deprivation overnight.

White noise eases that transition. It recreates the familiar soundscape of the womb, triggering your baby's calming reflex—nature's built-in "off switch" for fussing and "on switch" for sleep. A study of 40 newborns found that white noise helped 80% fall asleep within 5 minutes. Another study found that white noise significantly reduced crying duration and increased sleep time in colicky babies.

But here's the catch: Many white noise machines don’t play the right kind of white noise for sleep.

Why Most White Noise Machines Fall Short

Walk into any baby store and you'll find white noise machines advertising 20+ sound options: ocean waves, birds chirping, heartbeats, lullabies, jungle sounds. These can be lovely, but most of them don't reliably trigger the calming reflex.

The sounds that work for babies are continuous, monotonous, and low-pitched. The womb didn't play lullabies or mimic waves rolling in and out. It played one steady, rumbly hum, all day and all night. Inconsistent sounds (think: waves, birds, anything with a rhythm that rises and falls) simply don't have the same calming effect. And most white noise machines, even ones marketed for babies, produce sound that's more hissy than rumbly. That tinny quality misses what babies find soothing.

Dr. Harvey Karp developed SNOO's sounds to solve this. Every sound in SNOO is engineered to mimic the rumbly, womb-like quality that most effectively activates babies' calming reflex. The sounds include:

    • Rain: Peaceful and soothing for babies and parents
    • Strong hair dryer: Effective for calming fussier babies
    • Fast and vigorous white noise: The most powerful option for the fussiest little ones

Adaptive Sound That Responds to Your Baby

When your baby is sleeping peacefully, SNOO plays white noise at a baseline level. That's enough to sustain sleep and block out household sounds like a passing truck or a TV in the next room.

When your baby starts to fuss, that's not enough. To trigger the calming reflex in an upset baby, white noise needs to better match the intensity of the crying. SNOO's microphones detect fussing and automatically increase the volume and intensity of the sound—while still keeping it at a safe level for babies. Once calm is restored, SNOO brings the volume back down to baseline on its own.

This is what most white noise machines can't do. A standalone machine plays at one fixed level—maybe providing enough sound to help a sleeping baby stay asleep, but often not enough to calm one who's already crying. You'd have to wake up, find the machine, and manually turn it up. SNOO handles all of that automatically.

    Sound and Motion Together

SNOO's white noise is most powerful in combination with its gentle rocking motion. A 2019 study published in PLOS ONE found that the combination of swaddling, white noise, and motion evoked an immediate calming response in babies—and that this effect didn't wane as babies got older. SNOO pairs sound and motion together in its response, escalating both when your baby fusses and returning both to baseline once they're calm.
