How SNOO Automatically Responds to Your Baby's Cries

SNOO detects when your baby fusses and responds automatically—no app-tapping, no getting out of bed. Its built-in microphones “listen” for crying and trigger a graduated response of motion and white noise, in the same way you might boost the vigor of your rocking and shushing when your little one cries. As a result, many cries are calmed in under a minute! This is what makes SNOO a smart bassinet rather than simply a motorized one. Other bassinets, swings, and rockers wait for a parent to intervene manually, while SNOO responds to your baby’s needs.

    How the Response System Works

When your baby is sleeping peacefully, SNOO holds steady at its baseline—gentle, continuous rocking motion paired with low white noise that recreates the womb-like sounds babies find naturally calming.

The moment SNOO's microphones detect fussing, the response kicks in:

    • Motion increases from a slow, gentle rock to a slightly faster jiggle—the same intuitive escalation an experienced caregiver would use.
    • White noise increases in both volume and intensity, shifting from soft rain sounds (for a sleeping baby) to louder womb-like sounds (for an upset baby).
    • Both increase incrementally, moving through five response levels until your baby is calm.
    • Once calm, SNOO reduces back to baseline—it doesn't stay at the elevated level unnecessarily.

    SNOO’s Response Levels

In addition to showing you the response level in the Happiest Baby App, SNOO’s activity button’s color will indicate the current level, moving from Blue to Purple to Green to Yellow to Pink:

    • Baseline/Blue: Like gently rocking your baby in your arms
    • Level 1/Purple: Like driving a car around your neighborhood
    • Level 2/Green: Like taking a fast hike with your baby in a sling
    • Level 3/Yellow: Like quickly bouncing on a yoga ball
    • Yellow 4/Pink: Like driving with your baby on a bumpy road.

If crying lasts more than a couple of minutes, SNOO automatically shuts off and the Activity button will turn red.

    Automatic Shutoff

If fussing continues beyond a couple of minutes and SNOO cannot settle your baby, it shuts off automatically, signaling that your baby likely needs something else, like a feeding, a diaper change, or a cuddle.

This graduated, self-regulating cycle is what SNOO's responsive soothing automation means in practice.

    The Algorithm Behind SNOO’s Response

SNOO's response is driven by a sophisticated algorithm designed by Dr. Harvey Karp—the pediatrician behind the 5 S's method for infant calming—to replicate what a skilled caregiver does instinctively.

Customizing the Response to Your Baby

Every baby is different, and SNOO's responsiveness settings can be adjusted through the Happiest Baby App to match your baby's temperament and developmental stage.

    • Motion Limiter caps SNOO's motion at Level 2 while still allowing sound to escalate through all five levels. This is the default setting for newborns, and many families keep it on for the first several months.
    • Responsiveness adjusts how sensitive SNOO is to sound. If your baby is a loud sleeper who grunts and toots without waking, you can lower responsiveness so SNOO doesn't react unnecessarily. If your baby fusses quietly, raising it ensures SNOO catches those early cues before they escalate.
    • Motion Start Level sets the baseline SNOO begins from. Most babies do well on the default Blue baseline, but babies going through a growth spurt, sleep regression, or illness often sleep better starting at a slightly elevated level.
    • Level Lock holds SNOO at a fixed level—useful for babies who wake frequently and do better with consistent, unvarying motion and sound rather than a dynamic response.
    • Car Ride Mode adds a periodic slight jiggle to SNOO's baseline rocking, mimicking the irregular bumps of a car trip that many babies find especially soothing.

All these settings are adjustable from your phone in the Happiest Baby App, including in the middle of the night without turning on a light. (Some of these features require a Premium App Subscription.)

Why Responsive Soothing Matters for Sleep

A bassinet that soothes automatically does more than save you from getting up. It gives your baby consistent calming when they need it, including during the brief partial awakenings that happen naturally between sleep cycles. When SNOO catches those moments and settles your baby back down, the result is longer, more consolidated sleep for your baby and more rest for you.

SNOO is also used in nearly 200 hospitals, where hospital staff report that its automated soothing reduces the amount of manual calming time required for newborns in their care.
