Our baby boy sleeps great at night but during the day his naps are short & he is extremely fussy! Help!
Dr. Karp mentioned when babies this age are great all day but have fussy periods during the day, it usually means you have to give more of the 5 S’s during the day when he is happy (for example: time in a sling, being swaddled & belted into a swing on fast speed with background CD of white noise, sucking on a pacifier, out for nice walks, etc.). This should help him stay calmer in the early evening.
If he still gets upset then increase the intensity of the 5 S’s a little. Use our “Super Soothing” CD of white noise on tracks 1 or 2 and play at the intensity between a shower and a vacuum & try to be a little more ‘jiggly’ with your swinging. Make sure you are jiggling still only 1″ back and forth, but fast & jiggly and perhaps try doing the jiggling motion while sitting on the edge of a bed or on an exercise ball.
Dr. Karp highly recommends using the CD all night long as soft as a soft shower, track 3 works best for this. The CD is also extremely beneficial for use of up to at least a year and some parents find it useful for 2, 3 even 4 years of age and beyond!
