My daughter suddenly bursts into crying that sounds like she is in pain even when she is swaddled. This happens after we use one or all of the 5 S’s….any suggestions?
Dr. Karp encourages you & your husband watch The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. Parents who follow that approach carefully usually can calm their babies and keep them calm. You many want to try using white noise in addition the 5 S’s. Our Super-Soothing Sleep Sounds CD is great as it contains 5 tracks of specially engineered white noise which can be played throughout the day during naps as well as for the duration of nighttime sleeps. To get your daughter accustomed to the white noise & it’s calming attributes, have it playing in the background constantly throughout the day but make sure there are hours where it is not playing so she will be able to differentiate between the ‘time for bed’ and the ‘time for play’, etc. Dr. Karp recommends parents use the CD of white noise for the first 12 months and many parents find it beneficial for years to come! You may also want to try using the swing when your daughter is swaddled. This technique is also described on the DVD.

hello, i would like to ask if its ok to breastfeed while the baby is swaddled.
sure…but if the baby gets too sleepy try unwrapping
Is it ok for baby to sleep in the swing throughout the day for every nap? I have heard of babies losing circulation?
Hi Julia,
If your baby is under 1 month old, a premature or has hypotonia (a neurological problem that makes babies floppy like a rag doll), you should only use a swing bed (fully reclined) or get permission from your baby’s doctor before using a sitting type swing (their heavy heads can double over and make it hard for them to breath). It is fine for babies to sleep in the swing, but they need to be belted in securely, have the seat fully reclined and kept away form dogs. You can see this demonstrated in the Happiest Baby DVD.
Hi Audria,
How frustrating! Unfortunately, that’s a bigger question than I can go into here. But let me just ask, are you using white noise for all naps/nights?
I encourage you to find the first edition of The Happiest Toddler (maybe in your library) and read the section it has on sleep.
Good luck!
