My 3-month old son wakes up early from naps and can’t put himself back to sleep. What do I do?
Dr. Karp highly recommends the CD of white noise as it is an extremely important tool for calming. Often, parents need to use our CD of white noise vs. an air filter or a more humming sound and if all else fails you may need to have your son sleep swaddled with white noise continuously playing while in the swing (as described in The Happiest Baby DVD). Are you also using a large, thin swaddle blanket? If so, is he able to pop out of the swaddle during naps or nighttime sleep?
A great tool to use when weaning from the swaddle is our Super-Soothing Sleep Sounds CD. Dr. Karp strongly encourages parents to use our CD of white noise to add 1-3 hours sleep each night. Begin by playing the tracks on repeat about one hour before sleep quietly in the background, and once asleep increase the sound to that of a soft shower. Tracks 3 & 4 are great to played all night long and for the duration of naps as well. You may want to try weaning from the swaddle during nap time. The CD of white noise is great to use for at least the first 12 months and many parents use it for years to come! It helps getting babies into a deeper sleep so they don’t wake up with teething, etc. which begins around 4-6 months of age.
