Hi Louise,
That's a challenge. The key is to wake a baby a little when you put him to bed (starting in the first days) to teach self soothing...at this time you can still try the sound (as loud as a shower...the rougher, hair dryer sound), encourage a lovey, and you may need to do a sleep training routine (this should work within 2-3 days...you can read more in the FIRST edition of The Happiest Toddler..your library should have it).
Best of luck! Dr. Karp

I have a 3 1/2 month old boy who was has a severe cow’s milk protein allergy. He was about 1 month old when we found out. He cried day and night and never slept. We finally found a formula that was helping, but he still cried and never slept. I bought the DVD one night and tried the methods. We could actually get him to stop crying and sleep about 1 hour at a time. He is now 3 1/2 months and he is waking up a lot at night and I have to pick him up and walk him around to get him back to sleep. During the day his naps are 30min to 1 hour at a time, and that is if he even sleeps at all. He is so cranky because he is so tired. Everyone tells me I have spoiled him by walking him around all the time and to let him cry himself to sleep. I tried that and he cried for 2 hours never going to sleep. We use the Happiest Baby methods, but they don’t seem to be working. He just cries louder and louder with each method we try. I haven’t slept since he was born and I need help. I feel helpless and just want my son to be able to sleep peacefully. Thank you. Rachel
